Resident Evil 7 – Welcome?! My Ass!!

The time has come…Resident Evil 7 in all of its 1st person goodness, is here! If you’re a fan of the series like me, you’ve run to the toilet bowl to go throw up a few times because of its move into 1st person. (Trust me, I NEVER wanted this and somehow Capcom has gone and done something that may ruin the series.) But after putting 4 hours into the game. I’ve gotta say, Resident Evil 7 is a GOOD GAME!! It plays well, it’s a fun and enjoyable experience. Still I’m not convinced yet, being a purist fan of the series. Let me explain.

First off, in regards to the story canon of the series being blended into the game, I’m not seeing it. Save for a few familiar names mentioned in files, it’s just not there yet. I know, I know, it gets better as I move along, but for now…nothin.

Cutting to the chase, combat is smooth and tense, but movement and reaction is paced in order to balance the tight quarters you fight in. All of the Resident Evil elements are here to accompany the game: blind corners, well-placed scare moments, old-school RE item management (limited inventory with a storage box), very limited ammo with more baddies than you can unload on.

So far…Resident Evil 7 is disturbing is a good way. Scenes are so vivid in their portrayal, I kinda of feel It’ll be hard trying to forget them. Encounters are designed to make you feel uneasy, keeping you on your toes and never leaving you comfortable in your surroundings. It’s kind of like a bloody glove that fits you, it feels nice but the
blood on your hands isn’t getting off by itself. Lucky for you the cops are banging at the door..so what do you do?!  That’s what it feels like!

Gameplay wise, this reminds me a little of Clock Tower, which was a game that kept the player running and hiding. Except here, you can fight back most of the time, even if you’re in a losing situation; which is essentially WHAT survival horror is. That is why RE7 hits its mark so well, as it goes back to it’s core purpose.

A few months back, I read an article about how The Evil Within was nothing but a Resident Evil 4 sequel under a different name. At that time, I’d disagreed with the author’s stance and believed that The Evil Within was it’s own experience despite it’s similar gameplay. As you played it, the game did play and feel like Capcom’s Resident
Evil 4. (After all, the director of the Resident Evil 1-4, Shinji Mikami helmed the production.)

The story had an overall feel that was grander than anything Resident Evil 4 had been. Sure, the similarities were there, but it was it’s own game. What struck me the wrong way, was how the company and Mikami were trying to sell the game. He and the company tried to say that it would bring survival horror, “back to it’s roots.” Now looking at Resident Evil 7, I truly believe that The Evil Within failed in doing that. Resident Evil 7 feels like Survival Horror’s return to form. 1st person view or not, this feeling different, a good different. As a fan, I’m not welcoming it into what I consider a true continuation of the series or a respectful sequel, UNTIL I’VE FINISHED IT!
But for now, it’s good, tense and frightening; which is GREAT!!

I’ll keep you posted!

  1. I’m so glad to hear you’re loving it! So many people have been buzzing about this game, but sadly I’ve never played a single installment in the series. I hope that it continues to impress you! I totally hear you on the nauseating first person perspective. First person games destroy me too.

  2. As someone who loved but sucked at Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3, I can’t say I like the change to first-person. I’m also not really the target audience either. It just feels as if Capcom is trying to mimic the success of other horror titles.

    1. Have you played it?!
I felt that way too and went into it not judging it as a Resident Evil title.

Which is hard, considering that little spots during my play. “Ooooo, is that Alyssa Ashcroft, the reporter from Resident Evil Outbreak?!Cool.” (Name is mentioned in a file)

So, I am starting to compare it into the series, just waiting to progress further.

    1. RE7 does capture the meat and potatoes that it’s been missing RE3 Nemesis. Sure 4 and 5 tried capture that with big guy monsters, but the magic wears off on that eventually. They have their moments, but nothing like this game.

  3. I was weary of Resi Evil going all FPS style, but it works so well for Resident Evil 7. Not finished it yet, but having a great time playing, its so creepy and gory, brilliant game. A real return to form for the series!

    1. Kinda glad this wasn’t a disappointment. My only hope is, there is replayability like the other titles. For now, I got it from Gamefly, so we’ll see. Regardless it’ll be the overall experience once I’ve finished it that matters to me.

      1. Me too, Resi Evil 7 is certainly delivering the action and scares IMOP, and the story is really good too. Awesome graphics as well! Enjoy the game, be interesting to know what you think when you’ve finished it. I expect it will have replay value, and I think there is going to be DLC for the game as well later – one of which is going to be free I think?

  4. I want Resident Evil VII to succeed. If it performs well critically and commercially then it will show the publisher what we want from a true survival horror game. Excellent post.

    1. Thanks, dude! It truly needs that. My only hope is that we get that sweet Resident Evil 2 Remake. Just in its original fixed camera fashion…I don’t think I’d dig first person as the standard. Maybe an option to do both, that’d be cool.

  5. Right here is the perfect webpage for anyone who wants to understand this topic. You realize so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally will need to…HaHa). You definitely put a fresh spin on a topic that has been discussed for a long time. Great stuff, just great!

  6. Bammm !!!! I found another blogger who agrees with that RE7 is returning back to its roots. I totally agree with you…
There are many people in the blogosphere, especially in the WordPress.com’s side that are dissapointed what RE 7 has grown into but that’s not what’s really happening. The changes have made the game go in the direction of progress but one thing I should say about this game is that it’s quite an easy game plus it doesn’t has multiplayer. It would be good if it had multiplayer in which you there would be a survivor and the rest would be playing the role of spirits who need to stop that survivor from completing his mission. What do you think about this multiplayer thing ??

    By the way, great post…..

    1. Thank you for the compliment! At first, when you play this, it’s very hard and challenging. But if you are a good survivalist like me, you start to get a stockpile of ammo and it loses its challenge. Then again, I’ve been playing madhouse difficulty and I eat my words.
Personally, they should feature the titles with both first person and the classic still cameras in mind. I’m still more of a purist with the classic still cams though.
As for the multi-player, I’m up in the air. Previous games have done well with the Slayer/Mercenary type game play. Sad thing is, these systems need a major uplift and feel like they’re just missing…something
